Getting there
Kampala or Kigali
Kisoro is closer to another country's capital than to its own. Choosing correctly saves you the better part of a day.
From Kampala by bus
The road is fully paved the whole way, narrow and winding in stretches, running through Masaka, Mbarara, Ntungamo and Kabale. Expect eight to nine hours in practice. Private car in good conditions can do it in around seven.

Book the day before if you want to choose your seat. Night buses run this route; if you are travelling for a morning gorilla briefing, a night bus arriving at dawn is efficient but leaves you tired for a steep trek at altitude. Consider arriving a day early.
From Kigali
This is the route experienced travellers use. Kigali to Kisoro is roughly three and a half hours by road. Fly into Kigali, travel to Musanze in about two hours, take local transport to the Cyanika border post, cross, and continue the last ten kilometres into Kisoro town.
Private transfers run the whole way. If you are budget-conscious, the public chain works fine but leave the border crossing well before dark.
Driving yourself
The Kampala road is manageable in a saloon car. Inside the district, the roads towards Mgahinga and around Lake Mutanda are murram and get slick in the wet season, so a 4x4 is worth it between March and May and again in October and November.

Every one of these hours is a reason travellers sleep in Kisoro rather than passing through. A district that is hard to reach is a district where beds get booked for multiple nights.
Getting around once you arrive
Boda bodas cover the town and the near villages cheaply. For Mgahinga, Mutanda or Bwindi's southern sector, arrange a vehicle through your lodge the evening before rather than hoping to find one in the morning. Fuel is available in town.
